Job Description:

Drake International, Hamilton Branch, is working in conjunction with QSL- Great Lakes Stevedoring to hire a foreman for their Great Lakes Stevedoring Terminal in Hamilton.

The foreman in Hamilton will also be expected to assist in two other terminals, one in Port Weller and the other in Port Colborne. The home terminal for these positions will be Hamilton.

As the foreman your main responsibilities will be, but not limited to, the following:

  • Develop targets and maximize productivity of ship loading and unloading operations in accordance with occupational health and safety rules and avoidance of cargo damage
  • Plans operation, manpower, accessories and equipment required
  • Distribute and assign the work to team according to guidelines in collaboration with the ship’s crew or agents
  • Ensure constant communication with other Foremen, Terminal and Warehouse Supervisors with whom they are teamed
  • Carry out weight, volume, quantity and production calculations, avoiding overloading of lifting equipment and accessories during loading and unloading of vessel
  • Communicate to the shipping agent and the Operations Manager all information related to the production and completion times of the loading or unloading
  • Properly complete work logs, labour slips, tanker timesheets, and loading / unloading production sheets at each end of shift
  • Enter the data in the computer system (Statement of operations - work log)
  • Analyze the results of operations and recommend improvements in working methods
  • Provide management with regular performance updates and results
  • Deal with human resources issues such as working hours, work disruptions, health and safety issues, answering employees issues, making recommendations to improve conditions
  • Conduct toolbox meetings before each operation or start of shift
  • Communicate complaints, anomalies and OSH issues to those responsible
  • Completion of incident and accident reports
  • Ensure all employees are in compliance with maritime security rules

To excel in the position of vessel foreman you will need the following skills and qualifications:

  • Diploma in Logistics or Management
  • Previous management experience in the field of transport, operations and equipment
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Strong management skills
  • Knowledge of the concepts of the shipping industry and transportation
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment
  • Must be available to work all shifts and travel to different locations
